I got home last night from my week-long trip to Atlanta. I was there as an expert witness in a Federal copyrights and patents case. My client had a very successful e-commerce business, and his website was stolen and sold to the competition. In the end, there was a large settlement.

What made me start to think was that I first started out with an online store, and I failed miserably because I lacked the simple knowledge it takes to succeed in product sales. Sure I was good with seo, but that doesn’t mean anything in the consumer based industries.

Now that I am aware of what it takes, and a will to give it a go again, I have started searching through my massive database of wholesale dropshippers to locate the right product(s). The hard part is getting up the website, because online stores take a huge amount of setup and data entry. Even with product import, there is still a lot of data entry on things such as sales tax configuration, store details, branding, etc. Luckily, I have this down to a science.

Online Store Marketing

Promoting an e-store is different than promoting a general website, blog, or service. The game is different in the way that you have to target not only a specific niche audience, but also the specific product they are looking for. For instance, I would not promote my store with a general ad on Google Adwords or Facebook Ads. I would promote a single product with a title, description, and price of that specific product. That way, I am targeting a specific sale and will not waste my money on random clicks.
