Blogging Your Way to an Income
This is a guest post by Mandy Allen @ http://learn-to-blog.org
In today’s failing, world-wide economy, the thought of making money online has become more popular every day. Dreaming about working from home and making a good income while you sleep or play with your kids has become a major topic on thousands of wish lists.
Many might believe that it is way too difficult to generate income with unfamiliar Internet marketing processes or that it is too complicated and expensive to set up and run a blog. Others might believe that blogging is just a pastime and not a powerful and lucrative tool that will create a steady Internet income. They all would be wrong!
If you do a Google search for “blogging,” you will find almost 80,000,000 blogs online and dedicated to almost as many niches. That number alone indicates how popular blogs are. Blog topics can be related to hobbies, family ancestry, health discussions or making money online, to suggest just a very few niche topics. Putting the numbers aside, setting up a blog can be free and, other than the few processes you will have to purchase, like a domain name, a money-making blog will be very easy on your wallet.
Before you ever put anything online, it is vitally important that you define your goals. Do you want to make an income by blogging? Is it your intention to just promote your offline business? When do you expect to make money from blogging? Do you just want to have fun with your blog? If having fun is your goal, this discussion and the following posts are not for you.
After you identify your true goals with your blog, you will have a running call to action that can keep you focused on making money online. While you are examining your initial options, be sure to keep good notes and keep YOUR goals in your mind, so you don’t wander off topic and get lost in the Blogging wonderland.
Just putting up a blog will not do anything to help you succeed. What you need to do as soon as possible is to identify your market. You have to know what the members of your blog want to learn and what they need to really accomplish their own goals for making money online. How do you do this? You could simply ask them or add a questionnaire to your blog. You could also check out forums and other blogs focused on the same or similar niche that you selected. Reading posts in competing blogs will give you great insight on the needs and interests of your market.
Your next step would be creating your content, including a product to sell on your blog and one to giveaway for registrations. Those products can be anything that suits your blog’s focus, but most of the time it will be an ebook or report with related information for your members. You could sell physical products, but that would include shipping fees, packing materials and trips to the post office. eBooks that fill a need or solve a problem are sent attached to an email or downloaded directly from a webpage…no fees to pay or trips to the post office.
If you are unable to create your own products to sell or giveaway, I suggest you outsource that part of your marketing plan. Freelance ghostwriters can be found on many websites.
In future posts, I will address, in more detail, how you can create your own blog, get it online and making money for you. Right now you have a simple skeleton for your beginning. Plan your goals, make notes of what you want to do and don’t want to do and choose your first products to sell or giveaway on your blog.

This is so true. Almost everyone I know is trying to make money online right now, mostly as a supplement to their existing income; however our aspirations are mostly to rely solely on our online income, don’t you think?

Hi mandy,
good to see you on someone elses blog
And with some great content too….
Basics are very very important – as so many ‘secret tactics’ either don’t work or stop working…but good content and applied basics will always continue to work!

Hi Mandy!
Thanks for the good blogging basics tips. Like Randy, I think there are so many secrets tips or other hard to understand information for beginners that it is sometimes difficult to get started.
I agree with you, the basics are to decide on a target market and focus your efforts there. I always tell people to not worry too much about your blog being perfect because no one is going to see it until you start your marketing plan!
Thanks for the tips

Great post, Mandy!
You and I both know it is possible to make good money from our blogs!
My number one tip for newbie bloggers hoping to make money is to focus their blogs on making a personal connection with their readers. It is all about what you write and how you write it, it isn’t about how many adsense ads and animated banner ads you can squeeze in!

I have been using blogs to make money from for quite a while and I can say that it’s not easy to succeed. It takes months of dedication and hard work on SEO, content writing and similar things. For me it took nearly 8 months untill I started seeing a good income from AdSense.
Just set up some goals and a way to reach them. Don’t get too hard to achieve goals, have some small ones as well. This will make everything a lot easier as time goes by.

Hi Mandy,
Yes; define what your blog is to be about and set your goals… then start posting. I totally agree with Stuart’s comment. Start making blog posts about something you are passionate about and let your personality shine through! Don’t get too overwhelmed with the technical stuff but instead concentrate on building a faithful band of followers and they will be happy to buy anything you recommend.

Hi Mandy, great post.
I dilly dallied for farrrrrr to long about getting a blog online, wondering what to write about and if anyone would be interested in what i had to say. I wish i had this post before me then.
Fast forward a couple of years and my blog is online and people are interested in what i say
phew
and i’m starting to see an income for my efforts.
You’re absolutely right about defining our goals and keeping to them, so many blogs seem to be a miss mash of topics that take us all over the place. Sticking to the goals we set ourselves is a must.
To use an expression of Randy’s: Write your plans in sand and your goals in concrete.
Excellent work Mandy

@ Alexander, I absolutely agree, it takes hard work and dedication. If you let your pattern slip people will leave your blog.
@ Ian, I believe choosing a subject you are passionate about is the key to success. It shows when someone does not know what they are writing about or has no feeling for the subject.
@ Barry, lovely to see you here, Barry. Great quote from Randy, isn’t it.

Wow! What a super set of beginning suggestions for newbies. I’ve found that most newcomers to online marketing spend a lot of time lost in the huge Internet wasteland. All the online hype about making millions without working for it AND not planning specifically just leads to failure.
Online businesses, regardless of what they are, require the same diligence and and hard work as any offline business. The tools needed can all be found online, but many will not take the time to learn what’s needed to become a success. Sad, but true! Great advice and guidance, Mandy. Keep up the good work.

When I think back to early blogs several years ago, most were hobby projects that were more conversational or personal than today’s marketing powerhouses that have changed the way people market on the Internet.
Blogs are so easy and inexpensive to create, compared to traditional websites, that anyone can venture into Internet marketing without much expense or needing to understand mysterious processes.
Keep up providing your good advice, Mandy…newcomers need it!

Hi Mandy
This is a great set of instructions for anyone that runs their own blog. I’ve lost count of the many wordpress sites I have been involved with over the years but each one could still benefit from a tweak here and there.
You have inspired me to revamp my own blog – which I tore to pieces tonight and will be rebuilding over the next few weeks…the biggest thing that I needed to address was the key theme for my blog. I kept changing my mind, or maybe I was undecided, I’m not sure.
But I have cracked it…and hey it’s only taken about 3 years to get there…lol.
Thanks for the great post and I look forward to catching up soon, you’ve been missed and I have a little present for you.
Happy Blogging

Hey Steve, nice to see you here! Thanks for visiting. I know what you mean about setting things straight. I have wondered about changing themes and revamping, but I’m too scared to give it a go in case my traffic deserts me! Instead I create new blogs that look the way I want and have different topics I want to write about. Works for me, although building links to several domains is harder than tackling just one.
Enjoy the journey.

Reading your blog (as well as your previous blog that tackles about focusing) gives me a perception that focus and goal are the must have attitudes of a blogger in order to be successful.

Another great article. Starting up a blog is serious business and you need to work very hard both at the initial stages and afterwards. Most people are often discouraged at first but with persistence and hard work everything works out fine. Targeting a niche, researching and posting content that is relevant to that niche is what really matters.

Thank you for your comments, Brian. I often think some new IMers don’t really appreciate just how serious they should be, nor how much hard work it takes. I think there are too many products out there trying to tell everyone how very easy it all is.
