“Dropped by to Say Hi” Marketing and Other Cool Tricks
Non-obtrusive marketing is the best kind because it allows you to get your brand in front of people who use social networks. The cool thing is that it doesn’t turn them off because of the way you do it. A prime example would be MySpace. I often use MySpace and I like to comment on other profiles. But who says that my comments have to be bland?
See to the left this graphic that I designed today for my social network marketing efforts. This was designed so that I can actually stop by a MySpace profile and say hi to the friend while passing along my message at the same time.
My intention was to use the social network as it was intended, and drive some traffic to my blog at the same time. By keeping my intentions within the boundaries of the social networks rules, I can avoid being a spammer.
In order to do something like this, you either have to know how to use Photoshop, or hire someone that does. Luckily, such a small graphic design project should only cost a minimal amount.
Your graphic that you intend to use to drive traffic should have a “get to the point” message within it, and a call to action. Mine was to get them to click the graphic and go to my blog to learn how to make money blogging.
I can tell you right now that this does bring in traffic. I have seen the stats to prove it. This would not be the first website I have marketed like this. I have also promoted my web design and seo company using this process.
The key is commenting on the profiles that have the most friends, and comments. You will also obviously only post it on profiles that allow html comments. By posting it on high traffic profiles, you end up with more clicks from people who think that the graphic or the message on it is interesting. I would say that this is a form of guerrilla marketing because it is the “go and get it” approach.
Marketing is more than blog commenting and link building. Social networks are a huge potential source of traffic. If you had the big bucks and can afford to advertise on them, then great. Otherwise, use the guerrilla marketing within their guidelines to your advantage. If I were to just post a graphic that had my message without the “stopping by to say hi” on it, then I would appear to be spam. But because “stopping by to say hi” is common on MySpace, it is something that users already expect, and it’s non-obtrusive.

Have you gotten any verbal feedback from this yet, Brandon? Just curious to see how it hits people in terms of if they see it as being “social” or “advertising?”
It would be interesting to embed it in a survey and send it out to a core group for feedback. I used to do a lot of paid surveys, so every time I see a company/entrepreneur try something new, I get curious as to whether or not it’s been tested.
I don’t do a speck of pre-testing myself because the thought of it annoys my creative side.

I haven’t gotten any feedback either way, but I do know from experience that if profiles I posted on didn’t accept it, they wouldn’t publish the comment.
I like that, what a cool idea!!

How come you aren’t writing any new blog posts Scott? I see your last blog in every comment is the same for days now…

I have been doing MySpace graphics for awhile. They call the shiny ones blingies.
I can’t think of anything to say that hasn’t been said already.
Oh, and commentluv only updates me once a week since I’m not WordPress. I think they swing by my site on Saturdays.

Weird. CommentLuv was being strange to me before too by only showing my latest post and not the dropdown list. And no worries on finding something to say. Everyone did that for you

I think Scott’s Joomla based site freaks out at commentluv or somethig, besides, the latest post has this awesomely handsome father and son couple who should stay sticky for as long as possible.
This is a good concept, although I initially thought the article would be around blog commenting and how ‘just dropping in to say hi’ can have such powerful effects.
interested to see how you find the response to this, like Jean I eagerly await results.
Thanks Brandon

No problem Darren and thank you for “stopping by to say hi”. Yeah, I started doing that back when blingie sites were popping up and I designed some blingies with html ready codes and linked them to my sites. That way, people who were just after the blingies would end up marketing MY sites by getting me links.
Yah, commentluv is a WordPress plugin. I do have a commentluv account, but they cannot assist me other than saying “get wordpress”. What a cruel world. I hate being told what to do.
