Guest Posting: The Holy Grail of Blog Traffic
When I first set out to start taking blogging seriously, my biggest concern was where the traffic was going to come from. Yes, even an internet marketing expert with 15+ years of experience was terrified about how long it would take to generate traffic to his blog. But it didn’t take long for me to discover the secret to amassing a huge amount of traffic, and benefiting from inbound links at the same time.
The big secret? Guest posting. It’s not really a big secret. Actually, the big professional blogs out there tell you that if you spend a month doing nothing but guest posting, you will have a huge gain in traffic to your own blog in a short period of time!
Well I set out to start guest posting. It wasn’t as simple as posting on my own blog though. Some people think that if they just post an article on a high traffic blog, they will benefit from that traffic. That isn’t so. The key element for grabbing that traffic is to write your best work exclusively for the guest post. Yep you heard it right. I said to give away your best work! Why? Because you want to establish yourself as an expert, and a professional writer in front of a potentially huge audience. Do you want to risk turning off readers who would have never heard of you without your featured article on a blog they visit already?
Now, guest posting shouldn’t just be done on large blogs with massive followers. You should focus your initial efforts on guesting for smaller blogs in your niche. This way, you can grab a trickle of commentators to your blog, and benefit later on when that other blog gets bigger! So many people neglect this method because they are thinking in the now. They would rather alienate their peers for a chance to be seen on an established blog. Me? I would rather create long lasting relationships with smaller bloggers who may turn out to overtake me with influence one day. That’s when I can call them up and ask for help
When guest posting, don’t ugly up your article by attempting to include affiliate links. That honor should be made available to the blog owner you are guesting on. I prefer never to link to anything of mine, or anything I am affiliated with unless it is relevant to the topic and required as a “further reading” resource. You should never guest post with the intent of making a quick buck. You are building your brand, and a guest post should reflect you at your best. Your only link(s) should be an author credit on top and/or at the bottom of your article. This is less intrusive to the blog you are guesting on, and frankly it is more professional.
I hope you use my advice immediately and start working on your best material now. You will thank me in 30 days!

Great Post Brandon. As i always say Guest Posting is one of the easiest and effective way to get targeted traffic. Last month i have did my first guest post and i got 250+ visits alone from that.
This month my target is to do maximum 4 Guest Posts.

I aim to do at least 10 in June. I already got some out there for this month I believe so I got a head start. You think I can do 20?

Hey Brandon,
Good post on guest posting. I haven’t done any yet but with how much success I’ve seen (and heard about) from other people doing it it seems like I should. And it makes sense to save your best stuff for those other blogs since you want people to be interested in what you have to say.
Thanks for posting it!
Peace,

I remember seeing a few blogs upset about people submitting an original article for guest post, then they go and republish it on their own blog. That upsets the blog they submitted to because it ends up taking away from their Google rankings that article could have brought them.

If anyone can do 20 guest posts in a month, it’s you Brandon. And no matter where I read you’re posts, there’s always quality information in them. This was good motivation for me as I am revising a guest post now and have two others I’m working on.

Does that mean you will let me guest post on your blog Jean?

I agree mostly with what you’re saying. Yes focus on the smaller blogs. The larger blogs are more difficult to get traffic from. Reason being people are attached to those bloggers and aren’t keen on change.
Your blog now would be ideal for guest blogging as you’ve got the content here. There’s no point of guest blogging until you have a good amount of content.
I don’t think you’ll agree with me on this, but when I guest post, I look for blogs that provide anchor rich keywords, you’ve got the a good blog post from me, that I may have taken 3 hours to write and research and people want something good in return. Link building is hard enough but supplying good content is a good way of gaining a link or two.
Guest posting can be better than article marketing because you’re focusing on a target niche, where people are naturally interested in your niche.

There is nothing wrong with link building. I am an seo by trade after-all. But for the sake of building credibility and authority in your niche, sometimes it will due just to have a link back to your blog rather than worrying about having anchor text within that link.

Hey Brandon,
I like what you say about giving the best. I guess its a way to make a first impression after all!
I’m interested in how to actually go about doing it though. Is it a matter of emailing the blog host and suggesting the idea or is it better just to submit a post to them straight away in the hope they will publish it?
If you’re living proof that guest posting works, them I’m up for it!

Hi Bailey, I actually have had success with emailing and interacting with the guest blog rather than blindly sending in an article. That way, I don’t have to worry that I never get a response and I am unsure of whether to submit that article somewhere else. This is important because you only want your article to be published on one blog.

You are so right about guest posting Brandon. I just recently did a couple of guest posts and one of them resulted in a ton of traffic from the site I had guest posted on. It really does wonders and now I am off to do even more!
