How to Choose a Niche
So you started a blog or a niche site and now you want to sit back and watch the money roll in. Well, that is probably not going to happen. At least, not unless you did some planning first.
Honestly, there are no businesses that I know of that does not require the proprietor (you) to really work on their (your) product. This is true whether the (your) product is a toaster, a sales page, a blog, or a bottle of beer.
Unfortunately, there is no magical niche finder and no niche product that can successfully be sold by everyone.
What you will read below is the way that I recently determined what my blog is about. Funny, I know, since most people seem to believe that you MUST determine your niche prior to starting a blog. What can I say, I am a rebel.
Whether you are choosing a blogging niche or a product niche, there are several questions you must ask yourself and several tools that can be used to ease your efforts in finding your ideal niche business.
The process is really quite simple, but the level of competition makes it quite difficult.
Ask Yourself
If you choose something you have a great interest in, it will likely reduce the need for you to put great effort into some of the tasks associated with gaining and audience and/or a high search engine raking. Remember that you will need to carry this with you a while, so pick something you like! Now break that subject down into categories the best you can. Each of these is a potential niche that you can adopt as your subject.
What keywords or phrases really describe what I want to write about?
These are going to be the true basis for the content and search engine optimization that you do. This is where you need to really focus and put in some effort.
Who would buy this product or read this blog?
When I think of the right group of people, I think that they would be the people who like certain things connected to my subject. This might sound wrong, but it is likely that, if you are trying to earn money through your niche site or blog, you will want to target a certain group of people. That’s right. The group of people who have money. Now, I know many people who have money and trying to figure out who they are based upon how they look or their marriage status is not likely to get you anywhere. You may guess right or wrong here, but there is no sense trying to sell something to someone who is either not interested, or not able to purchase it.
Tools That Can Help
Your Turn:
What have you done to find new niches or to determine that one ideal niche for you?

Hey Mark,
Fancy seeing you here my friend.
There is waaaay too much information within this area to cover in a single post and I think you have done a really good job of outlining it quite nicely.
For me I found that I really didn’t have a passion per say. So finding my niche was all about just taking action. The more I did, the more I learned – and eventually I found my passion – this very subject!!
Thanks for adding to my link love with that reference too, awesome.

I noticed the switch when it happened man. You did blog about a broad amount of things related to marketing and then a flood of niche keyword articles! I am curious to see your Analytics referrals based on Google keywords that bring you traffic now.

Thanks for the compliment – it means a lot coming from an expert such as yourself. Perhaps ‘how to define your niche’ could be a good ebook idea?
Anyway, I have been learning more and more about this and it is quickly becoming a big interest to me too.
Have a great day Alex!

Last time Alex took on an ebook, he delayed a guest post. I think he’s spread thin with being on infopreneur now and all.

Mark:
Very nicely written for such a broad topic for discussion. The 3 questions you pose can definitely help someone find a niche that rights for them.
I am in a niche that I used to be passionate about but not so much any more. I have not put any time into it in the past 9 months and I can tell as the money has also stopped coming in. I was involed in the niche for several years. Now I have found a new passion and I am thinking about getting into it as a marketer. I need to do some more research to make sure it is viable.
There are also some niches that I am looking at that I am not passionate about but I know I can make some money from them. I am debating if the extra money is worth the time I need to put into it.

Hey Rick,
Thanks for pointing out how losing interest can effect your marketing/blogging efforts. It really does seem to take some passion to stay motivated to succeeed on the web.
I am going to be exploring this further over the next few months (as I learn about it – Alex “keyword research blog” Whalley has me more and more interested in this stuff).
Have a great day!

I generally choose niches surrounding my interests. Most niches are not that competitive if you drill down enough, and as I’m writing the content myself I need to keep myself happy first.
Then again, it does depend on the purpose of the website – you can quite easily target a few strong keyword phrases in search engines with a site that’s got a good domain, good 2-3 pages copy & strong links to it.

Hi Rhys,
I agree that it makes sense to me to choose niches that you are comfortable with, or even that you like.
Thanks for the comment!

If you don’t choose a niche that you are comfortable with, you are very likely to quit blogging. In that case, what’s the point of starting?

Usually i choose niches where i have some knowledge and that aren’t too competitive.
It’s very important to write about something you know in order to gain some trust

Hi Ian,
Yeah, it is the not-too-competitive thing that makes it hard(er), I suppose. You are surely right though – people aren’t going to listen to you if you seem to not know what you are talking about.
Thanks for your thoughts!

Competition is not really an issue if you look at it the right way. That being that most new bloggers drop out, so you can’t even count the hundreds of daily new blogs that pop up. Most of them will be offline or stale before you know it. Reference this article: http://www.brandonconnell.com/is-there-too-much-competition-in-my-chosen-blog-niche/2010/06/

This is something folks really struggle with. I’m all for preplanning and getting things straight from the start, but if you really don’t have a clue, then I say, ‘just do something!’ That gets the process started and ideas will come, even if we have to trip over them sometimes.’

Hi Jean!
You seem to use the method I used for icebluebanana. So far, its been fun, but if I ever choose to try to make any money with it, I am going to have to re-engineer it.
But, I do have to agree with you. For any creative process, the last thing you want to do it to not do anything.
Have a great day Jean!

That’s the strategy I used also. I jumped in, and changed my “way” partially through. It’s the opposite of what I teach but nonetheless, it does help you sort out what you want to do with your blog and you can only learn from it. How can that hurt?

Hi Mark
I followed this link through from your site thinking that it was going to be about defining your niche in business/life and potentially building a personal brand.
I must admit that after reading the first line I was slightly turned off as I’m not the slightest bit interested in building niche. While I was contemplating closing the window I started thinking about why I’m not interested in building a niche site…it’s mostly because that’s not where my interests lie and I don’t have any desire to know how do this very very well…this train of thought was prefect in-tune with your first major point so I kept reading.
Your two other main points also seem to have more generic applicability to things in business also what are the right keyword – what is your ‘unique value proposition’ that puts you ahead of the other monkeys building sites/businesses and who is your target market…I guess I have no major point here just the observation that the key steppingstones in building niche sites seems to be fairly similar to finding a niche in the business world in general.
BTW Brandon – I really do love your site design…you’ve managed to use a lot of info and still have a very clean and attractive site. Kudos
(& Brandon I guess)

Hi Sam,
I am sitting on a beach right now trying to catch up with everything that I have been missing. This is a great comment you have left here. I think that the concept of a ‘niche’ goes beyond niche marketing (which you mention as well). My thought here was really about getting an idea of what you want to focus on in your business or website.
A little more than that, actually. When I wrote this, I had been trying to determine on what topic I wanted the focus on for icebluebanana.com.
Great comment (as always) Sam. Have a great day!

Making money online can be easy and hard at the same time. It totally depends on how you plan and how hard you work. Most people do not chose the correct niche and this leads to blogs or sites which receive no visitors at all. The information here is very enlightening.
