Make Money Blogging With List Posts
As you may have read on many blogs about blogging, list posts are very popular. But did you know just how popular they actually are?
I have my homepage set for Yahoo! and it’s been that way since I was 13 years old. I am now 29, so that’s a pretty long time. Having Yahoo! as my homepage means I get my daily news from them, and that’s how I keep aware of what’s going on in the world. A lot of the time, a health article or something about specific industries pop up. One of those things popped up today, and it was something like “35 things airline pilots won’t tell you”. At the end of this big list post, there was a list of other list posts.
Think about this. If Yahoo’s Shine blog is posting list posts like nuts, maybe it’s a good idea for you right? RIGHT!
List posts are popular for specific reasons. One of those reasons being that it is very easy to follow a list post. The items are broken down into an organized, controlled format. List posts also provide summarized information that you feel you must know.
Over my career as a blogger, I have posted many list posts. A lot of them were about coming up with blogging topics, blog topics that are popular, etc. I have written list posts about failure and how you can prevent it. This goes on and on. Why? Because list posts have brought me a ton of traffic! I have not written a single list post that hasn’t been well received.
Alas, I finish this post with a list of reasons to use list posts.
- List posts are easy to create content with. You know how it becomes hard to write all the time? With list posts, you only need a subject and then you can just list out things related to that subject.
- List posts are popular. If you did nothing but write list posts, the chances of your blog becoming popular faster than any other is great.
- List posts do well in search engines. I have seen tons of list posts come up on the first page of Google which have turned me into a regular reader for the blog hosting the post.
- Lists are a great way to make money. You can flip the way you do reviews and do a list of great products for your niche.
- Lists create loyal readers. Something about a list posts brings out the best of everyone. Even people who don’t read very much will go through a list post. They will most likely bookmark it and come back to read more.
- List posts get linked to. If you want to build some deep links to your blog, create list posts that other bloggers will rave about. People love to share list posts as reference material.
There are tons of ways that list posts can work in your favor. If you have not looked into the power of them, then you are truly missing out.

Very true, Brandon. Some of my best and most popular posts are lists. I also think they are just easy to read. Let’s face it, rarely does everyone read every word we wright, rather they skim through looking for the info they want. Thanks for the great reminder to do more list posts!

Hi Brandon,
I should, I guess, use more lists. My problem, while composing a post, I rarely think in numbers or lists. When I write on categories like the Coolest Blogs or Best WordPress Plug-ins, then I think in terms of lists.
Lists by and large are guidelines or directories of information. I really like to take a thought or issue and run with it. I think it comes down to style.
I will tell you this, I have one “KILLER” list. I love it. I get a big kick out of reading it again and again. Here is the link: http://bloggersmarket.com/blogging-quotes-to-live-by/
Really take some time and work your way through this list, Brandon. You will be glad you did.

I will check it out Jeffrey. Thanks. You should do list posts more often, and try to work past any issues preventing it. It really is worth the effort.

Hi Brandon,
I always figure lists posts are good for when you need content in a bind. It’s a good way to get past writer’s block. I would work on the creative content first and use lists posts not more than once a week or so.

I would have to respectfully disagree with the timeline of one list post a week. It all depends on the writer really. List posts don’t have to be an emergency tool, but rather a tool that pulls in readers left and right. If I were to write nothing but list posts from now on, I am 100% sure that most of my readers would start linking to them as reference material on a daily basis.
It’s just a great tool on general if you want to become the resource for a specific niche.
List post is really good, for the reason, it’s easier for the eye to read and also much more nicer in the way it look and believe it or not, even in sales letter, listing is where prospect will be reading to find out what the benefit are…

100% agreed! Much easier to read and keeps my attention unlike a huge paragraph or two. Lists just POP!

So, why do you think list posts do well in search engines? Do you think that perhaps googles uses this criteria as part of their algorithm?

No I don’t believe so. I believe they rank so well because list posts tend to be very relevant for searches. Most list posts answer questions, and people type questions into Google. It’s really pretty simple if you think about how it works. Definitely worth writing more list posts.

OK, but I’m not convinced as list don’t always answer questions, usually they’re used to make a point.
Now I’m not saying that they’re not important, they are, I’m just not sure that they would rank better in search engines merely because they lists. I mean if you missed all the dot points and just had the information don’t you think they would get the same results from the search engines as all the same information is still there?

Well a regular paragraphed article with the same content WILL rank just as well. And the ones that have good content do. Not all list posts jump ahead of regular ones either. I made no such argument. But I do know that people tend to think better about what to say in list posts because they are really drawing attention to them with those bullet points, which is why a lot of list posts do really well.
