networking 150x150 Networking secrets from a celebrity pr consultantNot too many people in my current life know exactly what I do for a living. That’s mainly because I don’t just bring it up in conversation. I used to be a recording artist with some decent credits. I since sort of retired from that. It was causing me to have severe depression. I went on to advance in the marketing world, and I have even appeared as a guest consulting on radio shows like The Curtis Sliwa show on WABC NY. They asked me to provide my expertise to discuss the then major news story of a girl committing suicide after being harassed on MySpace. Remember that?

Since then, my expertise has been secured by multiple celebrities as a PR Consultant. My jobs is to ensure that they look good in the media. How did I get these celebrity clients you ask? Well, that’s the secret.

I have gotten some of them through search results in Google when they were seeking someone with my knowledge. Others have come to me as referrals because I am known to bring results. Of course there are times that results cannot be achieved because clients fail to take the advice that they hired me to give them. But either way, I charge a hefty fee in the thousands because I need to be able to focus on my client rather than hundreds of clients. To do that, I have to be expensive in what I do.

Networking is key to my fee if you don’t mind me rhyming. I have spent a lot of time putting myself out there, and I thrive on it. I have taken hours every day to make appearances on Facebook pages and groups. I work hard to get powerful contacts and referrals. Most importantly, I don’t wait for someone to throw me a bone. I go through their cupboards until I find that bone.

If you want to be great at networking, you have to learn how to do it from many angles. What I mean by that is that you have to do it both online, and offline. An example of offline networking would be for you to attend a blogger meetup or seminar where like-minded individuals go. You would bring with you a business card, or in this case what I like to call a blogger card. It should have your web address and your social network urls on it. It should also let people know the topics you blog about.

Online networking can be done through various means. You can go to websites related to your topic and contact the owner. Invite them to check out your blog, and you can even give them a call if you feel comfortable with it.

Keep in mind that networking is a 2-sided affair. You are looking for contacts, but so are they. You have to make the contact feel as if you have something to offer them in order for your networking to be successful. How you do that is totally dependent on what you do, or the topics you write about and are knowledgeable in.

When you do get the contact, do not be afraid to ask them if they know someone that may be interested in what you have to offer. This is key to expanding your network. If you fail to take this simple step, you can lose out on a large amount of potential powerful contacts. They are yours to lose.

Good luck on your networking journey, and drop a comment below to fill me in on how you like to network.
