Ways to Make Money Online That You Never Thought Of
Since 2002 I have been working from home. I have been self-employed ever since I bought my first software for search engine submission back in the old days. At first, I started with only a few hundred bucks that year. As time went on, my income grew from self employment. It eventually grew into a $40,000 per year income from web design and search engine optimization business alone. That does not include the sprinkle of $10,000 celebrity consultations that I do here and there. It also does not include the money I make from blogging, and direct ad sales on other websites that I own.
You probably found my website because you were looking for information on making money from your blog. But I wanted to teach you other ways to make money online so that you can make a few extra bucks in the meantime while your blog grows to the point of monetization.
- Services – This is my biggest source of revenue. I sell my professional services to those who need them. My sales come from ads, referrals from past clients, return clients, and my networking activities. You don’t have to be a web designer or seo expert to sell services quickly and make some fast money. Ask yourself what you are good at, then go out and promote it as a valuable service. Assign a cost to it, and that’s what you will charge to perform this service. You can get some immediate traffic from Craigslist.org and by creating a small website and commenting on blogs. If your service is local based only then you can network through your community. Talk with local people you know, ask for referrals, and pass your business card around. You can also network at gatherings like those that take place at church and church activities.
- Join affiliate programs – I like to join a few affiliate programs and setup single page sites with good content on them. I can then bring in traffic by blog commenting. You can make immediate income from affiliate programs even though it seems daunting for you to do so. It is just a numbers game, and creating pages that are trusting in nature. Be descriptive and accurate when providing free information on your single page sites. You can bring in some incentive for readers by offering free products to them. I like to use InDigital Works because they allow you to offer free products as incentive to get newsletter subscribers, or for other offers on your sites. They have free options, and paid upgrade options for even more free stuff.
- Sell articles – Not only can I sell articles on Associated Content and Constant Content, but I also sell them directly to webmasters. I can sell them on Craigslist under the writing services section, and other sites. There are also freelance websites out there where people are looking for content. In addition, you can setup a page on your blog to offer your services. Notice that I offer services on my blog too!
- Ebay – Online auction sites such as Ebay can make you some good money. I had a seo client in the past who was raking in $30,000 per month selling commercial restuarant equipment. Ebay takes awhile, and patience to get going because you have to establish your reputation first, kind of like blogging. But when it starts being successful, it snowballs and money comes in quickly. Don’t just settle for Ebay though when there are tons of auction websites that pop up with the help of commercial auction site scripts available. People are into the website clone thing, and some auction sites are entirely free with zero commissions taken whatsoever.
- Etsy – You can start an online store. Etsy is a handcrafted and homemade items distribution outlet. There are people making hoards of money selling through Etsy. Whether it’s bird-houses or candles, you can make some good money by setting up a free Etsy shop. Make your store stand out by using your own domain name, and if possible upgrade to some of their paid options for marketing help. I started an Etsy shop with my 10 year old son, but we haven’t figured out what to sell yet. I am thinking about doing some woodworking with him.
- Request donations – Believe it or not, if you put a donation button up on your blog, you just might get some donations. Readers who enjoy your content will donate a few bucks if it means that your blog will stay online for a very long time. Provide value, and create a sense of community on your blog, and you will establish a level of trust with your readers.
- Use p2p lending – There are sites out there that allow you to get loans from regular people like yourself. One such site is Prosper.com but you have to have a minimum credit score. Such sites allow you to get loans to sustain your business. State your case, and many people can pitch in until you have the full amount of your loan request filled. You can pay this amount back in a small monthly payment, and use leverage to build your business.
- Sell your stuff – This isn’t the same as selling on Ebay. While you can sell some items around the house on Ebay, you can probably sell them faster on Craigslist. They have a “for sale” section there, and I actually have some professional recording studio equipment up for sale as I write this.
- Barter & sell – This is something I like to do every now and then. Someone needs a design or seo work from me, and they have something valuable to offer in exchange. I can do the work for them, then I would sell their item(s) on Ebay or Craigslist. It is a win/win deal really, and it can be very profitable.
- Free & sell – Ok, this is a great thing about Craigslist. You can actually pick up stuff in the free stuff section, and then turn around and sell it. I know a guy who built a huge business doing this with furniture. What have to got to lose other than some gas money and time picking up some free stuff?
Making money online can be very easy to do. You just have to be creative, and know where or how to look. Money is out there waiting to be handed to you, and all you have to do is stick your hand out and grab it. Be ethical in your money pursuits, and you will attract money without looking for it.
Do you make money online? If so, how?

Hey Brandon,
You have made some good suggestions here. I’m currently implementing Adsense and Amazon links. I’ve also a link to my web host.
I haven’t thought of selling articles yet, but have considered implementing a premium content section of the website. Maybe it’s something you could do here eventually? Offer a subscription service.
I have learned over the past month that you have to look at everything as a potential business opportunity – we’re doing it at home at the moment, to make up some extra cash for our honeymoon.
I used to have a donate button on my website, and have heard of their being many people that do random acts of kindness or are honest people who will send you a few notes for your efforts. I would be interested to hear some more feedback from your readers on this point however.
Cheers,
Mark

Funny you mentioned it. I do plan on sectioning off a portion of my forum in the future for premium content, but for the most part, access to everything will remain free. I like my site to be a free resource as much as possible. I will likely make the jobs section premium or something. But that is way ahead in the future.

Great post, Brandon.
With the whole free & sell idea, I’ve actually seen people buying things from different countries (via eBay) and then selling it to people in their country, making double profit off of some items. All you have to do is sit down, do some research, and then act. It, of course, involves a ton of risks, but the payoff can be HUGE.

The quickest and most money came from selling my services. Even the simple web design jobs brought in a couple hundred dollars easily, and those leads came in when I posted ads in the computer services section of Craigslist. It is about making your ad stand out from the rest, and that is done through the title of your ad.

Hi Brandon, I am working on selling software tools for bloggers. It is starting to pick up momentum. I am testing a few different methods of generating traffic and testing the sales copy. I want to put the systems in place before growing it too much as the last thing I want is to be tied to the business like it’s a full time job.

Good idea. Get ahead of the game before it overtakes you.
Selling your own stuff can be very profitable. Typically to make it worth your time though, the items you sell need to be more high end. I’m not a huge fan of ebay though. They’re always changing rules and fees on sellers so it can be hard to stay ahead of the profit margins.
