Why Your Gravatar Just Doesn’t Cut It
Gravatars are great marketing tools. If you have one of your own, you can brand your image on other people’s blogs. How? Well, gravatars are meant to be your picture which go next to every comment you make on other blogs. It’s kind of like a logo. You know what Nike’s gravatar would look like if they had one right? It’s all about branding your image so that everyone knows who you are just by looking at your gravatar.
If a gravatar is not used properly, did you know that it is unlikely to be worth more than every other insignificant image on the web? Your gravatar must stand out from the crowd in order to be remembered. I have noticed some gravatars that I would just never remember because they decided to use their picture as their representation. There are even some bloggers that I communicate with on a daily basis and as I write this, I cannot remember what their gravatar looks like (sorry guys).
You may notice my gravatar above. I designed this one of 5 minutes. I am a graphic designer, so I had that on my side. But I knew that mine had to be unique and it has to be recognized when blended in with thousands of other comments on some of the larger blogs. I can honestly say that I achieved that goal. I can skim across a comment area on ProBlogger.net and instantly pick my comment out from the crowd because my gravatar just stood out at me.
Please do yourself a favor today, and redesign yours so that you know for a fact that you stand apart from the rest.

I love your gravatar, Brandon, but who could forget seeing my helpful, smiling mug plastered all over the internet? I need to haunt the places you go so you’ll never be able to forget me. Haha.

lol. Well so far I have been able to pick you out, but you have to think like this… there are a LOT of faces in this world. Creating a design would just help you stand out. Even if you modified your picture like adding a stroke around the image, or a frame of some sort.
You see my gravatar all day. Don’t deny it.

Good points here Brandon, even though my Gravatar is helping ‘bringing sexy back’ to the internet hahahahahaha (groan) As far as scott goes, I see his bloody gravatar that much that it’s almost a logo in and of itself!
But seriously, I might use my logo as my gravatar…
….now to go get a logo

Funny on the bringin sexy back. I don’t wanna laugh too hard and make you not wanna come back though. Yeah I think you should design a new gravatar that represents your business.

hey, you’re a graphic designer. if you get bored you can make one (nudge nudge wink wink)
But seriously though, I was thinking of a logo as the @ symbol but with the beginning of the tail doing an extra up and down so that it ended up as my intiials (a.w)??
what you think?

Sounds cool.
Hey Brandon,
Do you know if it’s possible to make a Gravatar for guests? I tried, and thought it would be pretty easy, however I had to create an email address to verify. Then upload a picture, then change the email address in my Gravatar system in Joomla and then it works. However, since I changed the email address, that person won’t be notified of updates (if they chose that option.)
Just curious.

Not that I know of, but I have heard of a plugin that allows you to add a new default gravatar that isn’t the standard ones in WordPress. That wouldn’t help you though because you use Joomla
